South Korea's top general held phone talks with his new counterpart at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Thursday to discuss a joint response against North Korean military threats, the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.
In their phone conversation, JCS Chairman Adm. Kim Myung-soo and Adm. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of the NATO military committee, shared their assessment of the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and discussed ways to enhance military cooperation between South Korea and NATO, the JCS said.
Kim underscored the need for a joint response with NATO and the international community amid increasing uncertainties caused by Pyongyang's nuclear and missile threats and its deepening military cooperation with Russia.
Dragone concurred on the importance of cooperation, noting that North Korea's evolving nuclear and missile technologies and strengthening ties with Russia have become a global threat, as security in the Indo-Pacific and in Europe are becoming interconnected.
Dragone, who formerly served as Italy's chief of defense, took office as chair of the NATO military committee on Jan. 17. (Yonhap)
