An impeachment motion against Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung was reported Thursday to the plenary session of the National Assembly led by the Democratic Party (DP) over his alleged role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid.

The decision came hours after the Supreme Court decided to strike down a lower court's acquittal of DP presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung on charges of election law violation.

The DP accused Shim of colluding with Yoon in the "unconstitutional and illegal" emergency martial law declaration on Dec. 3 and the armed insurrection riot that mobilized the martial law troops and the police.

Under the law, an impeachment motion must be either put to a vote or referred to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee for further review within 24 to 72 hours after it is reported to the plenary session.

The DP decided to send Shim's impeachment motion to the judiciary committee.
